The goal and purpose of the Life Science Safety (Biosafety) Program is to protect all employees, students, the public, and the environment from contamination with or exposure to hazardous biological agents or materials (biohazards) being used at the University of Pennsylvania. 

The Biosafety Program provides guidance on: 

  • Biohazardous waste management
  • Biological Agent Registration in BioRAFT (SciSure)
  • Biosafety cabinets (certification, use, and retirement)
  • Laboratory safety and containment practices
  • Research compliance and NIH Guidelines
  • Shipping requirements for biological materials
  • Special containment facilities (BSL-3, ABSL-3)
