Program Description

The foundation supports early-stage biomedical investigators engaged in basic and translational research that has the potential to make fundamental advances in biomedical science.

Limitation

Schools may submit two (2) applications for Penn’s internal competition.

Eligibility

  • The funds are designed to provide faculty members who hold MD and/or Ph.D. degrees and are in their fifth to eighth year of a tenure-track, with support to move the project forward to the point where R01 or other independent funding can be obtained. 
  • Candidates may have an R01.
  • For any sponsored research projects, the applicant must be eligible to serve as Principal Investigator for the project, unless otherwise noted in the LSO. Please see Penn’s PI Eligibility requirements to ensure you are eligible. 

Award Information

A research award of $125,000 per year for a period of 4 years, (total $500,000)

Review Process

Selection Criteria

The University has been invited to nominate 2 faculty members. A committee, established by the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR), will determine the final nominees to represent the University. Each year, thirty institutions are invited to nominate two candidates. Four finalists will be invited for an interview with the Foundation’s Trustees and one to two Scholar Awards are granted each year.

OVPR Internal Review Process

Applications must include the following:

  1. Cover Page which includes:
    1. Proposal Title
    2. Candidate’s name, academic rank, department, email address, phone number and campus address.   
  2. Letter of Nomination (maximum 1 page)
  3. Research Proposal (maximum 3 pages): including project title, aims and objectives. References should also be included to support the proposal but are not counted in the three-page limit. The proposals should be targeted at the Trustees’ scientific members.
  4. A CV (Using NIH format) (maximum 5 pages), which includes educational background, professional appointments, awards and honors. Include all current research support (start-up and external) and pending support, including dollar amounts and start/end dates.
  5. All materials must be submitted in a single pdf document in the above order to vprgrant@upenn.edu 
  6. Subject line of the email should be, EMF_SCHOLAR_applicant LAST name_ applicant FIRST name.
