Penn and BioNTech Launch $50 Million Fund to Accelerate Life Sciences Innovation
New partnership will invest in early-stage companies translating Penn discoveries into therapeutics, diagnostics, research platforms, and tools.
The University of Pennsylvania, BioNTech, and Osage University Partners have launched the $50 million Penn-BioNTech Innovative Therapeutics Seed Fund (PxB Fund), creating a new source of early-stage investment for life sciences companies emerging from Penn research.
The fund is designed to support seed- and Series A-stage companies developing therapeutics, diagnostics, research tools, and other life sciences technologies based on Penn innovations. Osage University Partners will manage the fund, which is expected to build a portfolio of approximately 15 companies during its early years.
The PxB Fund addresses a particularly important stage in research translation: the period between a promising academic discovery and the clinical evidence often needed to attract larger-scale investment. By providing capital at an earlier point in company development, the fund can help Penn researchers establish companies, advance technologies, recruit experienced leadership, and move discoveries closer to patients.
Building on the Penn–BioNTech Research Relationship
The initiative also deepens Penn’s longstanding relationship with BioNTech, headquartered in Mainz, Germany. BioNTech’s development of mRNA-based medicines has significant connections to foundational mRNA research conducted at Penn, including technology that contributed to the development of COVID-19 vaccines. The new fund creates another pathway through which scientific discoveries originating at Penn can benefit from industry expertise, investment, and development infrastructure.
The partnership comes amid a challenging funding environment for early-stage biotechnology companies and adds to Penn’s growing network of resources supporting faculty entrepreneurship and research commercialization. It also builds on a longstanding relationship between Penn and Osage University Partners, which has invested in multiple Penn spinout companies.
Accelerating Research Translation at Penn
Moving discoveries from laboratories toward products that benefit society requires connections among fundamental research, entrepreneurship, investment, and industry. The PxB Fund strengthens that continuum while bringing together Penn’s research enterprise with complementary expertise from the biotechnology and investment sectors.
Through support for research innovation, commercialization, and strategic partnerships, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) helps foster an environment in which Penn discoveries can move beyond the laboratory and toward meaningful societal and health impact. International partnerships such as Penn’s relationship with BioNTech also demonstrate how sustained connections with research and industry leaders around the world can create new pathways for innovation.
