Mirjam Cvetič Receives Humboldt Foundation Research Award for Pioneering Work in Theoretical Physics
Carl Friedrich von Siemens Research Award recognizes Penn physicist’s contributions to string theory and supports research collaborations at leading institutions in Munich.
Mirjam Cvetič, Ph.D., Fay R. and Eugene L. Langberg Professor of Physics in Penn’s School of Arts & Sciences, has received the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, recognizing her influential contributions to theoretical physics.
The award honors internationally distinguished researchers whose fundamental discoveries, theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their disciplines. Cvetič is internationally recognized for her work in string theory and its implications for fundamental particle physics.
Her research addresses some of the most fundamental questions in modern physics, including how string theory might help reconcile gravity with quantum mechanics and explain the particles and forces observed in nature. Her scholarship has helped establish connections among string theory, particle physics, and the mathematical structures underlying theories of the universe.
As part of the award, Cvetič will conduct research at the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (LMU). The research period creates opportunities to bring together complementary expertise at Penn and two of Germany’s leading centers for theoretical physics while developing new approaches to questions at the intersection of particle physics, gravity, and string theory.
